VPN To Keep Your Data Secure.

Using a VPN while surfing the net is like having health insurance while surfing the perfect swell in the ocean. If something bad happens you’ll be glad you had it. This is why it is wise to use a VPN to keep your data secure.

And not only does a VPN keep data secure, it also allows you to watch Netflix anywhere in the world.  Ok, that is not as important as keeping data secure, but Netflix is an essential part of a traveler’s life!

What Is A Virtual Private Network?

According to Wikipedia: A virtual private network extends a private network across a public network, and enables users to blah, blah, blah. Basically, it is a secure tunnel between your device and the website you want to browse. When I say secure I mean encrypted so no looky-loos can ‘read’ your data. When you use public Wi-Fi outside of your password protected, trusted network, you are vulnerable to sharing everything you type with a stranger.

Pros

  • Since all of your data is encrypted(scrambled) now you don’t have to worry about exposing any passwords, personal banking info or using credit cards to make purchases online.
  • It hides your IP(Internet Protocol) address.  This is the physical location of you and your device. This is my favorite feature.
  • So now you,
    • can select what country you want to tunnel from. If your bank sees you are logging in from Timbuktu instead of home, they most likely will want you to answer all those annoying security questions or possibly freeze your account.. When juggling as many credit cards as we do, this can get tiring real fast.
    • can access certain websites that are not allowed outside their home or licensed region. For example, Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, etc.
    • can access VoIP(Voice Over IP) For example Skype, Facetime, Google Duo, etc.
    • can access certain websites from your home region when ‘you’ are physically not there. Some countries do not allow access to certain websites in other countries. For example, trying to log into Facebook while visiting, let’s say, any particular communist country.
    • may get cheaper flights. Some foreign airlines may give a better price to those who purchase within the airlines own borders.

Cons

  • Sometimes a VPN can slow down speeds. This is super frustrating when dealing with an already slow speed. When this happens I’ll curse repeatedly. Then, I’ll turn off the VPN and avoid any personal info sharing activity.
  • Sometimes a website will simply not load. I have this problem with IHG for example.
  • VPN usage does burn more data. Consider this when using expensive data plans with ESim or SIM Cards.

Tips

  • Avoid using a free VPN to keep your data secure. You get what you pay for.
  • You need to download the VPN to each device so make sure the plan you select covers the number of devices you’ll need.
  • Be sure to choose the option for your type of device and what browser you use.
  • They may offer a free trial sign up period to try it out.
  • They may have other useful products that work well together. TunnerBear has RememBear for passwords. Also a Blocker for ‘blocking simple ad’s and a new generation of privacy invading techniques and tracking’.

Wrap Up

Just like in the photo of Masha securing the Abu Simbel Temple in Egypt, using a VPN to keep your data secure is key. Sometimes I have a love-hate relationship with my VPN but it is an essential travel tool. Plus, how can I stay mad at the bear? He’s so cute. Do you use a VPN to keep your data secure?

  1. Interesting. When we started travelling we used a VPN simply because we wanted to log into Netflix. That was 5 years ago and I think we used Hola which stopped working at some point.
Now we don’t bother because we can access Netflix from anywhere. But interesting to read this post, I always thought VPNs were dodgy and not 100% legit…

    1. Hi Frank, No totally legit and has saved our bacon quite a few times. Very nice to meet fellow nomad travelers!
