Forget what you think you know about Sardinia, the second biggest island in the Mediterranean. Beyond the postcard-perfect beaches lies an island of fierce pride, ancient traditions, and a raw, untamed beauty that truly inspired and awed us.
Italy is our favorite country for many reasons and we have traveled through all of it for decades discovering new treasures annually. Yet Sardinia was that island that we just never got to. So this year, we decided to take a deep dive into this mind blowing land.
Our first question to our expert guides and Sardinian friends was: What is the best area to stay in Sardinia? What are the top B&B Sardinia experiences? We didn’t want to stay in one of the many planned resort communities which make you feel like you are in Cabo or the Bahamas.

The goal was to discover the island’s heart through its incredible local accommodations. What we came up with isn’t just a list of B&B Sardinia options; it’s your guide to the best area to stay in Sardinia in the most perfect home base, where the host remembers your name and the views from your balcony become a cherished memory.
This guide blends the best area to stay in Sardinia with some of the top things to do here. So you can pick and choose between medieval cities or more modern ones blended with beaches that are secluded or dance party level – your choice.
As always, our recommendations are our own and we do not profit in any way from them. In each one of the B&B Sardinia suggestions we also list a contact email or What’s App number. Sometimes it is cheaper to go direct and sometimes Google’s recommendations (all our links are to googlemaps) are better. Try both and see what is best for you.
First, The Essentials: Planning Your Sardinian Escape

When to Go: The Secret of the Shoulder Seasons
Bottom line we highly urge you to avoid July and August if you can. The crowds are immense, prices soar, and the heat can be brutally intense. We experienced a blistering 40°C (104°F) in early June, so imagine the peak of summer!
The island feels lighter in the shoulder seasons and is just so much more enjoyable. Our recommendation is to come late April to mid-June and then late September through October which are the golden times. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful sunshine, warm seas perfect for swimming, and the space to truly breathe and enjoy the landscape.
Getting to the Best B&B Sardinia Has to Offer

Sardinia is well-connected by air and sea. The island has three main airports: Cagliari (CAG) in the south, Olbia (OLB) in the northeast, and Alghero (AHO) in the northwest.
For a more romantic arrival, and the convenience of bringing your own car, ferries run regularly from mainland Italy (Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia), France, and Spain.
To truly explore the pockets we’ve outlined below, renting a car is highly recommended. However, public transport in Sardinia is a lot more accessible than the very limited transit options in Corsica. ARST provides great coverage with buses and TrenItalia with trains across some of Sardinia.
In addition, you can rent a mountain bike for about 25 euro per day and an ebike for about 40 euro per day. A dingy for 2-6 people is 150 – 160 euro per day plus fuel and a license is not necessary.. More on these later with specific rental recommendations.
The Northeast – Costa Smeralda’s Glamour: Best Area to Stay in Sardinia

Why It’s the Best Area to Stay in Sardinia
This is the Sardinia of legends and the most logical starting point for many, thanks to the nearby Olbia airport. The Costa Smeralda is a stunning coastline of wind-sculpted granite, hidden coves, and water in shades of impossible blue.
It’s an area of undeniable glamour, with some of the most perfect B&B Sardinia experiences. Especially for those who appreciate world-class beaches, fine dining, and a sophisticated atmosphere. However, if you want dance clubs, check out Dolphin Beach and if you want secluded coves, they are scattered along this coast!
What to Do Here

Explore Ancient & Medieval History of Arzachen and Posada: When you’re ready for a break from the sand, a short drive inland to visit Arzachena and Posada is highly recommended!
Arzachena: First visit this charming town with it’s colorful staircase. And then, step back 3,500 years into the heart of Sardinia’s mysterious Nuragic civilization. This area is an open-air museum of Bronze Age wonders. Visit the impressive stone fortress of Nuraghe La Prisgiona to imagine life within its complex village.

About a 35 minute drive south of Olbia, is the hilltop medieval town of Posada, one of the most beautiful historic villages in Sardinia. Let yourself get lost in the labyrinth of narrow, winding streets as you climb steadily towards the 13th-century Castello della Fava. Your reward is a spectacular panoramic view.

Day Trip to Bosa: About a 1 hour 45 minute drive from Olbia is Bosa: Famous for its colorful houses descending to the Temo River, Sardinia’s only navigable river. Its historic center, particularly the “Sa Costa” district, features labyrinthine medieval streets and pastel-painted buildings. The 12th-century Castle of Serravalle sits on top of the town, offering great panoramic views.

The South – Cagliari’s Culture and Caribbean-like Coasts

Why It’s the Best Area to Stay in Sardinia
The south, centered around the capital city of Cagliari, offers a blend of urban culture and jaw-dropping beaches. This pocket is ideal for travelers who want the amenities of a capital with a happening night life, and a coastline that has sands so white and waters so turquoise they are consistently compared to the Caribbean.
What to Do Here

City & History: In Cagliari’s Castello district, don’t just wander—seek out the Bastione di Saint Remy for panoramic city views, climb the medieval Elephant Tower, and admire the Pisan-Romanesque Cattedrale di Santa Maria. Just outside the city, visit the Nora Archaeological Park, where Phoenician and Roman ruins meet the sea.

La Maddalena Archipelago – An Island Explorer’s Paradise

Why It’s the Best Area to Stay in Sardinia
While many visit on a day trip, staying on La Maddalena island itself is a game-changer. It allows you to experience the authentic buzz of the main town in the evenings, hit the beaches on neighboring Caprera before the boats arrive, and truly immerse yourself in the rhythm of island life. You’ll need more than a day; we stayed for three and still ran out of time!
What to Do Here

Become Your Own Captain: This is the best way to see the archipelago. We recommend Negoccio F.M. Service (What’s App: +39 347 278 8117) for renting a small boat (gommone) that doesn’t require a license. Chart your own course to the secluded coves of Spargi island and the natural pools of Budelli to see the famous Pink Beach (Spiaggia Rosa) from a respectful distance. Cost is 160 euros per day + petrol.
Explore Caprera by Bike: The connected island of Caprera is a rugged national park. We highly recommend renting bikes from 189 Garage (189garage@gmail.com). The English-speaking staff will sort you out with an e-bike (€40/day) or mountain bike (€25/day) and you can explore both Maddalena and Caprera on 2 wheels.
Historical Hikes: On Caprera, bike or hike to the southern tip to explore the abandoned tunnels of Fortezza Bastiani, a military fortress with incredible views.

Best Beaches with a Hike: For another great trek, take the path to Cala Coticcio (a guide is now mandatory for this beach) or the easier, no-permit-required hike to the beautiful Cala Napoletana. Both of these hikes are 35 minutes one way from the car/bike park.
If you would like an easier beach to access, then try Cala Serena on Caprera. After parking on a dirt road, the beach is a 10 minute hike one way and is truly worth the effort! The crescent white sandy beach has crystal clear water for swimming and snorkelling.

The East – Gulf of Orosei’s Dramatic Beauty

Why It’s the Best Area to Stay in Sardinia
This pocket is for the adventurers. The Gulf of Orosei is a wild coastline of sheer limestone cliffs that hide some of the Mediterranean’s most spectacular beaches, many accessible only by boat or a very challenging hike.
Cala Gonone is the perfect launchpad for these unforgettable excursions and we spent 3 nights here, renting a boat during the day to explore all the nooks and crannies. If you boat to beaches be prepared to swim as you will need to moor your boat 30 meters from shore! You can drop off your stuff on most of these beaches first.
What to Do Here

Boat Excursions: This is a must. Rent a small boat (gommone) or join a tour from Cala Gonone to explore legendary coves like the moon-like Cala Luna, the pebble-filled Cala Mariolu, and the iconic Cala Goloritzé.
We loved renting from Mathilda at the Cala Ganone Charter Company, What’s App: +39 377 081 6206
Hiking: For serious hikers, the multi-day Selvaggio Blu (40 km hike) is one of Italy’s most rewarding treks. For a fantastic day hike, take the trail from the port of Cala Gonone over the hills to the beautiful Cala Luna (approx. 2 hours each way).

Caves & History: You can explore the enormous Bue Marino Grottoes by tour boat for 52 euros per person. Or if you want a lesser known cave experience which can be done with your own boat, then visit Grotta del Fico for just 10 euros. It is famous for being a former habitat of the monk seal.
For a unique hiking adventure, visit the ancient Nuragic Village of Tiscali, hidden within a mountain sinkhole.

Castelsardo & The Historical Northwest

Why It’s the Best Area to Stay in Sardinia
This corner of Sardinia has some of the most jaw dropping beaches coupled with the historical town of Castelsardo. Castelsardo with it’s magnificent Doria Castle cascades down a hill to the sea in a rainbow of pastel houses. It’s a place of ancient crafts, breathtaking sunsets over the Gulf of Asinara, and a palpable sense of history on every cobblestone street.
What to Do Here
Explore History: Get lost in the winding lanes of Castelsardo’s old town, hike up to the 12th-century Doria Castle and visit the Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo (Museum of Mediterranean Weaving) inside. Don’t miss the mysterious pre-nuragic Roccia dell’Elefante (Elephant Rock) just outside of town.

Legendary Beaches of Stintino & Porto Torres: While Castelsardo has its charm, a day trip about an hour west is essential to experience some of Sardinia’s most famous waters.
Spiaggia La Pelosa (Stintino): This is the main event. Often ranked among the top 3 beaches in Sardinia, its impossibly shallow, turquoise water and iconic watchtower create a scene of pure paradise.
Pro Tip: You cannot simply show up to La Pelosa. Pre-booking is mandatory and sells out months in advance. We witnessed a couple who had paid €40 to a third-party site get turned away. You must book through the official website: spiaggialapelosa.it. The cost should only be €3.50 per person/day.
To give you an idea of demand, when we checked in June, the earliest availability was in September! If you want to experience it, try booking for the very end of October when the water is still surprisingly warm but the crowds have vanished.

The Smart Alternative: If you can’t get a reservation for La Pelosa, don’t despair! Head to the adjacent Spiaggia Della Pelosetta. It’s just a short walk away and has a beautiful view of the same water, and does not require a reservation.
Spiaggia di Balai (Porto Torres): On your way to or from Stintino, stop in Porto Torres to see this gem. It’s a charming cove of golden sand and clear water, framed by rocky outcrops and the picturesque, white church of San Gavino a Mare.
