Best Snorkeling Spots in Koh Tao
1. Hin Ngan Bay
Forget all the other snorkeling locations, Koh Tao’s Hin Ngam Bay (“beautiful rocks” in Thai) is one of the best snorkeling spots in Koh Tao! Located on the southeast corner of the island, between Aow Leuk Bay and Sai Daeng Beach ( (on most maps it is called Hin Ngan), this place is a snorkeler’s paradise.
Getting there is a breeze from Sai Daeng Resort. Just head to the pool and take the stairs on the left.
What makes Hin Ngam Bay so special? It’s pristine! Since it’s not directly accessible from a beach (though you can swim from nearby bays), the crowds stay away. You’ll have the place to yourself as you explore the massive underwater boulders teeming with marine life.
We’re talking black-tip reef sharks and a whole lot more! Trust us, this is THE spot for the best snorkeling in Koh Tao!
- Why Visit: The pristine water and few people.
- Access: You can reach Ao Hin Ngam by swimming from nearby Sai Daeng Beach or Aow Leuk Bay (though be mindful of the currents). Step right off the sand and into an underwater world of colorful coral and fascinating marine life. No boat trips needed! Alternatively, some tours do include this bay as a stop.
2. Aow Leuk Beach
Aow Leuk Bay which means deep bay in Thai has pristine white sands, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic rock formations that create a picturesque setting. The bay’s unique geography, with its deep, concave shape, ensures ideal snorkeling conditions even at low tide and makes it one of the top snorkeling locations in Koh Tao.
Beneath the surface, coral reefs teem with marine life, including colorful fish, anemones, and the occasional blacktip reef shark. For the adventurous, you can do a night snorkel to see the bioluminescent coral illuminating the darkness – many of the dive shops we recommend below provide this as an option.
- Why Visit: Aow Leuk has some of the most colorful coral gardens on the island. The bay is surrounded by white sandy beaches, perfect for relaxing between snorkeling sessions.
- Amenities: Nearby restaurants make it easy to refuel after exploring.
- Tips: The left hand side of the beach is better for snorkeling.
3. Tanote Bay
Koh Tao’s Tanote Bay offers fantastic snorkeling in Koh Tao with an adventure just steps from the beach. However, be mindful of the shallow coral at low tide and enter the water carefully.
About 30 meters offshore, a massive boulder creates a diverse underwater landscape. One side features a shallow coral garden teeming with life, while the other descends gradually to 18 meters, showing off staghorn, brain, and table corals.
The bay’s clear, warm waters attract a variety of marine life. Keep an eye out for young blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, octopus, angelfish, groupers, and colorful anemones.
Experienced snorkelers can venture along the bay’s southern edge. While the waves crashing against the rocks may seem daunting, the currents are generally mild, allowing for extended exploration of the vibrant reef.
- Why Visit: This secluded bay is known for its crystal-clear waters and cliff-jumping opportunities. The reefs here are less touched, offering an authentic snorkeling experience.
- Access: The road to Tanote Bay is steep but manageable with a motorbike or taxi.
4. Hin Wong Bay
Hidden away on Koh Tao’s secluded northeast coast, Hin Wong Bay is a true underwater paradise. This picturesque bay, has dramatic cliffs around it and offers some of the island’s most stunning snorkeling and diving opportunities.
The bay’s crystal-clear waters teem with marine life, from vibrant coral reefs to schools of colorful fish. Snorkelers can explore underwater pinnacles and caverns, encountering a diverse array of marine creatures, including clownfish, butterflyfish, and even the occasional stingray or blacktip shark.
For a truly unique underwater experience, consider a night snorkel with one of the local snorkel/dive shops recommended below. Equipped with UV goggles and a special torch, you can witness the magic of bioluminescent coral, creating a mesmerizing underwater light show.
While the beach itself is small and rocky, it provides a serene setting for relaxation and sunbathing. Kayaking is another popular activity, allowing you to explore the bay’s hidden coves and secluded beaches.
- Why Visit: With its steep underwater slopes and colorful coral, Hin Wong Bay is a hidden gem for snorkelers. It’s quieter than many other sites, providing a serene experience.
- Tips: Water shoes are recommended due to the rocky shoreline.
5. Shark Island
This small, fin-shaped island is located just 800 meters south of Koh Tao and is a haven for snorkelers.
Accessible by boat or a quick 15-minute kayak trip from Sai Deng Beach, Shark Island has shallow waters teeming with marine life, particularly around its northwestern tip. Secure your kayak to the floating buoy and dive into a colorful under water world.
While currents can be strong, the sheltered areas near the rocks provide a calmer experience. Here, you can see colorful sponges, tube corals, and gorgonian fans. Keep an eye out for filefish, turtles, and even reef sharks patrolling the depths, making this one of the top snorkeling locations in Koh Tao.
- Why Visit: You will most likely see reef fish like filefish, butterflyfish, and clownfish darting in and out of the coral, Hawksbill turtles and black tip reef sharks.
- Tips: Go early in the morning for calmer waters and better visibility. Also, be mindful of the currents, especially at the island’s tips. Stick close to the rocks if you need a break.
6. Japanese Garden (Koh Nang Yuan)
Koh Nang Yuan, with its three small, lush islands connected by delicate strips of white sand, is a picture-perfect paradise. The Japanese Gardens, is one of the best snorkeling spots in Koh Tao as it has calm, shallow waters perfect for all skill levels.
The colorful coral formations resemble a garden, teeming with fish and other marine life. It’s easily accessible by boat and a great place to see a variety of species in a beautiful underwater setting.
The underwater world is bursting with life, including clown fish in their anemones, butterfly fish, clams, and schools of parrot fish. However, unfortunately the coral reefs have suffered significant damage here.
- Why Visit: Located on the privately-owned Koh Nang Yuan island, this site offers calm waters and stunning coral formations. It’s perfect for beginners and families.
- Entry Fee: A fee of 250 THB is required to access Koh Nang Yuan.
- Tips: Visit in the morning before day trip boats arrive and spoil the fun.
7. Shark Bay (Thian Og Bay)
Though nicknamed “Shark Bay” for its young blacktip reef sharks, Thian Og Bay offers more than just these fascinating creatures. Home to beautiful views, this exclusive area has some of Koh Tao’s most luxurious accommodations including our favorite: Jamahkiri Dive Resort & SPA.
For the best snorkeling experience, begin at Jamahkiri Resort and head down the stairs. At the bottom you will find a small beach to enter from.
Another option is to head to the Cape Shark Pool Villas and follow the cliffs around the bay. You’ll encounter diverse fish, corals, and if you’re lucky, even green and hawksbill turtles. Be prepared for strong currents and surges around the rocky corners with a reliable set of fins.
While the shallows may reveal some damaged coral, don’t be discouraged! This area remains a haven for the playful blacktip sharks, offering a unique underwater encounter.
- Why Visit: Known for its blacktip reef sharks, Shark Bay is a must-visit for adventurous snorkelers. Green ocean turtles also frequent these waters, making it a hotspot for marine encounters.
- Tips: Visit in the morning for better visibility and a quieter experience. Shark sightings are most common near the outer reefs.
8. Mango Bay (Aow Muang)
Located on Koh Tao’s northernmost point, Mango Bay is a tranquil escape from others on the island. While accessible by a challenging road (do not try to attempt this on a scooter), the most enjoyable way to reach this spot is by boat. Consider pairing it with a visit to the Japanese Gardens.
Beneath the surface, Mango Bay reveals a thriving underwater world. Schools of yellow scad and yellow tail barracuda shimmer through the water, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The bay also harbors a wealth of macro life, with seahorses, mantis shrimp, and nudibranchs hiding amongst the sandy seabed and coral gardens.
Beyond its underwater treasures, Mango Bay has a beautiful stretch of beach and two luxurious resorts. If you’re seeking a more exclusive island experience, consider staying in this serene corner of Koh Tao. However, be aware that one of the resorts charges a fee for beach access.
- Why Visit: This picturesque bay is famous for its excellent visibility and colorful fish. The calm waters make it a favorite for snorkelers and swimmers alike.
- Access: Best reached by boat due to its remote location.
9. Sai Daeng Beach
Sai Daeng Beach is on the south side of Koh Tao island. It has a nice beach with palm trees and coral reefs close to shore.
One of the reasons we think this is one of the top snorkeling locations in Koh Tao, is because you can snorkel right off the beach. The best spot is on the east side of the bay, where there are big rocks in the water. You might see sharks and lots of colorful coral there.
If you swim around the eastern edge of the bay, you’ll get to Hin Ngam Bay. It’s another good place to snorkel or scuba dive, but be careful because the water can move quickly there.
You can also rent a kayak at Sai Daeng Beach and paddle to Shark Island. When the water is calm, it only takes about 10-15 minutes to get there.
- Why Visit: The bay features unique rock formations and semi-submerged boulders that create a dramatic and interesting underwater landscape.
- Tips: Rent a kayak and paddle out to Shark Island for a different perspective of the area.
10. Sai Nuan Beach
Sai Nuan Beach, with its two distinct shores, Sai Nuan 1 and Sai Nuan 2, offers a tranquil escape on Koh Tao. Both have pristine white sand and inviting turquoise water, perfect for relaxation.
Koh Tao’s rugged coastline is beautifully showcased at Sai Nuan, where large boulders encircle the bay. These rocky formations attract a variety of fish and hard corals, creating an interesting snorkeling environment. While the less developed beach offers better snorkeling, the second beach provides rustic charm with beach bars and bungalows. Enjoy refreshments and delicious Thai food while watching the sunset.
Although Sai Nuan may not be our first choice for snorkeling in Koh Tao, its serene atmosphere and secluded beauty make it a good option for those seeking a quieter island experience.
- Why Visit: The gorgeous white sandy beach is great for a day at the beach with some snorkeling included.
- 2 Beaches: Sai Nuan actually has two beaches. Both offer good snorkeling, but the less developed one (Sai Nuan 2) generally has better underwater scenery.
Best Time to go Snorkeling in Koh Tao
The ideal time for snorkeling in Koh Tao is from February to May, when the waters are calm, and visibility is optimal. During this period, the weather is sunny, and the oceans are clear.
Imagine crystal-clear water with 20-meter visibility, warm temperatures, calm oceans, and an abundance of fish. It’s a snorkeler’s paradise! Plus, if you’re lucky, you might even spot a whale shark between February and May.
Avoid October through Mid December, as the monsoon season can bring strong winds, rain, and poor water conditions.
In addition, June and July can be a bit unpredictable due to the mini-monsoon (what the locals call this time). While there isn’t a full force of the monsoon, occasional rain showers and windy conditions are possible. However, these disturbances are typically short-lived, and you can expect mostly calm and pleasant weather.
Year-round, the air temperature remains warm, with minimal variation. The water temperature, ranging from 27℃ (81℉) to 32℃ (90℉) is perfect for snorkeling and diving. Visibility and water conditions can vary based on daily weather patterns.
Bioluminescent plankton can be found year-round as well. However, the best time to witness their dazzling display is during a moonless night, especially during the new moon phase.

Tips for Snorkeling in Koh Tao
Sometimes I just feel silly stating the obvious, but seeing folks do some pretty harmful things in the water, I want to add this bit of common sense to our Koh Tao snorkeling guide. Now I know that you know better than to touch corals or disturb Marine life, but since I have seen tourists trying to yank pieces of coral from the ocean floor, pick up starfish (which pretty much kills them), etc., I thought it would be best to include this:
- Respect Nature: Avoid touching corals or disturbing marine life.
- Gear Up: While rentals are widely available, bringing your own mask and snorkel ensures comfort and cleanliness. You don’t know how many times, my rented masks have leaked….
- Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Protect both your skin and the fragile coral ecosystem.
- Plan Your Visits: Early mornings offer the best visibility and fewer crowds.
Sustainability and Responsible Snorkeling in Koh Tao
Koh Tao has faced environmental challenges due to its popularity. We try to support eco-friendly initiatives by choosing sustainable accommodations, using reef-safe sunscreen, and participating in local conservation programs. Many dive centers also host beach cleanups and coral restoration activities, allowing us to contribute positively to the island’s ecosystem.
It’s amazing how many times we would start cleaning up a beach somewhere in the world, and others would join in. It’s a good feeling to give back.
