Andorra with it’s 468 sq km of giant peaks, cascading valleys and charming villages is actually an independent country perched between Spain and France in the Pyrenees.
This is a country that is not part of the EU, does not have an airport, train services, it’s own currency or even an Andorra post office. However it has the highest capital in Europe!
Many folks from Spain and France visit Andorra on a day trip from Barcelona or Toulouse to purchase cheap goods as the country has a very low VAT rate of only 4.5%. And of course tourists come to ski, snowboard, hike, mountain bike, enjoy the world class spas and the Romanesque architecture.
Our comprehensive Andorra travel guide has all the essentials for enjoying the outdoors, visiting the best Spas and seeing the nicest quaint villages for their history and architecture. We have also included many Andorra travel tips so that you are fully prepared for your trip and have the inside scoop for the best trip here!
Best Time to Visit Andorra
Because Andorra is in the Pyrenees, it does experience all 4 seasons. Therefore, Andorra’s appeal varies with the seasons, catering to diverse interests.
Winter (December to March): Ideal for winter sports enthusiasts, as Andorra transforms into a snowy paradise with excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions.
Spring (April to June): Mild temperatures and blooming landscapes make it perfect for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities. This is a shoulder season in Andorra, making it cheaper to travel here.
Summer (July to August): Warm weather is ideal for mountain biking, hiking, and exploring nature trails.
Autumn (September to November): Crisp air and colorful foliage offer a serene environment for cultural experiences and hiking. Autumn is the second shoulder season in Andorra and is a great time to visit while saving some money.
Now, we went in January and the weather was warm enough for hiking and enjoying a lot of the nature below the ski peaks. Although it was pretty windy!
How to Get to Andorra
As we have mentioned, Andorra is one of the few countries in the world that doesn’t have an airport. In addition, Andorra does not have train service either. However, it is pretty easy to get to Andorra la Vella – the capital of the country. Here are the best ways to get here:
By Bus
Several bus companies operate regular services from both Barcelona, Spain and Toulouse, France.
Barcelona to/from Andorra: Bus picks you up at either the Barcelona airport or at the Barcelona Sants station where it picks up more passengers. The journey between Barcelona Airport and Andorra is approximately 3.5 hours. The bus company that we used was reasonable and departed on time: Direct Bus. The cost is 35 – 45 Euro.
Toulouse to/from Andorra: Bus picks you up at the Gare Matabiau train station. Half an hour after leaving the station, the coach stops at the city airport to pick up the remaining passengers. And from here it sets off for Andorra, with a 3-hour journey from the airport (3 hours and 30 minutes from the train station). The best bus from Toulouse is Andbus. The cost is 30 – 45 Euro.
Prague to Andorra travel is easiest on a plane from Prague (PRG) to Barcelona (BCN) followed by a 3.5 hour bus from the Barcelona airport to Andorra la Vella. Costs range from $85 – $285 USD.
Another option for Prague to Andorra travel is to fly from Prague (PRG) to Toulouse (TLS), then take a 3.5 hour bus ride from Toulouse to Andorra la Vella. Costs range from 90 – 345 Euro.
By Car
At first we wanted to rent a car, which seemed very reasonable and most accommodations in Andorra la Vella offered parking. However all the weather forecasts were calling for snow and we were concerned about getting stuck.
Oddly, we have been asked about Prague to Andorra travel the most!
Andorra travel tips – Transportation
If you rent a car during the winter, make sure to rent snow chains for your tires as well. Police upon entry into Andorra may check if you have them, and if you do not, there may be a fine.
In addition, be aware that the elevation changes dramatically as you climb into the mountains. Andorra la Vella, the capital, is at a lower elevation, but towns like Canillo and Soldeu are much higher. This means you will actually need those snow chains if there’s any snow (chains are readily available at gas stations and supermarkets if you didn’t rent them in advance).
In addition, we recommend booking bus tickets in advance as all the buses that we were on were full even though it was January!
Do you need a Visa: Andorra Travel Guide
While Andorra itself has no visa requirements, needing only a passport or EU national identity card for entry, its location within the Schengen Area means you still have to follow Schengen visa rules. Since you must travel through either Spain or France to reach Andorra, you’ll need to fulfill their entry requirements first.
Furthermore, a multiple-entry Schengen visa is required because you will have to pass through those countries to exit Andorra as well, as Andorra is not part of the Schengen Area.
Note that Andorra travel restrictions Kazakhstan have been lifted as well as the travel restrictions for Russia’s citizens.
Logistics – Andorra Travel Tips
Currency
The official currency is the Euro (€). There are also plenty of places to exchange currency if you need to do that. In addition, ATMs are abundant if you need to withdraw cash.
Just remember to always decline the exchange rate of the ATM when they ask you during your transaction. Your bank will have a much better exchange rate than what the ATM will be proposing.
Connectivity
Be aware that some international mobile providers may not offer roaming services in Andorra. Consider obtaining a local SIM card or checking with your provider before traveling.
Language
Catalan is the official language, but Spanish, French, and English are widely understood, especially in tourist areas.
Top Attractions: Andorra Travel Guide
Andorra la Vella
As the capital and highest city in Europe at 1,023 meters above sea level, Andorra la Vella has a charming old town with historic sites such as the very photogenic Casa de la Vall and the 11th century Church of Sant Esteve.
Of course you will want to visit the Pont de Paris – An avant-garde bridge that crosses the Valira River. In addition, the Salvador Dali bronze clock statue that is close to the Pont de Paris is worthwhile as well.
The city is also a hub for shopping, offering numerous boutiques and duty-free stores. Andorra’s tax-free haven status makes it a shopper’s paradise, especially for visitors from neighboring Spain and France. In the past one could also purchase a vehicle here. However, that rule has changed.
Since Andorra is not an EU member, its VAT regulations differ, allowing shoppers to buy luxury goods and other items at significantly lower prices than back home. This makes Andorra the most visited country per capita in the world.
Above Andorra la Vella is a lovely hiking/running trail called Rec del Sola that offers great views down over the city. It is a bit of a vertical hike to get up to it, but we highly recommend it!
Andorra la Vella is also known for it’s many spa experiences. The best in town is the Wellness Experience Andorra, where you can get everything from a therapeutic massage to rituals and facials! If you would prefer to have a spa in a hotel, then the Andorra Park Hotel is a good choice.
Grandvalira Ski Resort
Grandvalira Ski Resort is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees, it provides extensive slopes suitable for all skill levels, making it a prime destination for winter sports. The skiing is phenomenal for intermediate and advanced skiers and every Andorra travel guide lists this as the best ski resort in the area.
The views are breathtaking, the slopes are wide open, and you’ll often find yourself skiing in blissful solitude. It’s truly a skier’s paradise. Oh, and if you have an Ikon Pass, it’s valid here!
Things We Learned:
- We recommend staying at the Els Llacs Apartments. They have units with 1 – 3 bedrooms and include access to indoor and outdoor hot tubs and saunas.
- You can rent skis right next to the Els Llacs apartments for half the price of renting at the mountain.
- Leaving your skis at the mountain overnight saves you the hassle of carrying them back and forth.
- Start your day at Grau Roig and explore westward to the other peaks.
Vallnord-Ordino Arcalís Ski Resort
Just a 45 minute drive north from the capital and a 10 minute drive from the lovely village of Ordino is another popular ski area – Vallnord-Ordino Arcalís. These slopes are known for their excellent snow conditions and diverse slopes, catering to both beginners and experienced skiers.
In the summer this is a fabulous area for hiking as there are a number of different hikes available. This place has amazing views and great hiking trails. To get to the trails, you have to take a cable car. It’s a bit annoying because you could easily drive up the mountain, but they make you park at the bottom and take the cable car instead.
There is a second cable car to the very top. At the top of the first cable car, there’s a cafe and a place to relax. From there, you can choose from a few different hiking trails that take you to some beautiful lakes and viewpoints.
Caldea Spa Complex
Located in Escaldes-Engordany (just east of the capital), Caldea Spa Complex is one of Europe’s largest spa complexes. It is the huge modern triangular peak that you see from most parts of the capital. Opened in 1994, this 18-floor spa resort features indoor/outdoor thermal pools, saunas & wellness treatments perfect for relaxation after outdoor adventures or just to pamper yourself.
Most Andorra travel guides list the Caldea Spa as a place to see – so our recommendation is to go in and take a look. However, one of our Andorra travel tips is to experience the best spa: Wellness Experience Andorra for the actual best spa experience.
Sant Miquel Engolasters Church
This 12th century Romanesque church with it’s distinct bell tower also has interesting paintings and sculptures inside.
It is also a good place to visit during the golden hour of sunset. As the sun sets over the capital and lights start to come on in the valley below, the area around this church is still quite light, making it a great place to take pictures, especially at that time.
Charming Villages to Visit
Ordino
Ordino is a small village in the north of Andorra, just a 25 minute drive from the capital. The village has quaint streets to stroll and traditional stone buildings which in the summer have beautiful pink flowers covering their rooftops.
Known as the cultural capital of Andorra, Ordino has a few interesting museums. The Casa d’Areny-Plandolit and the Casa de Rossell are museums that show life in the region from the 15th century until now. There is also a museum about the postal service in Andorra as well.
Pal
Pal is another small yet romantic village in Andorra that is only 25 minutes away from the capital. It is a perfect place for nature lovers as Pal is surrounded by mountains and forests making it cozy and inviting.
One of the must visit places in Pal is an 11th century church called Sant Climent de Pal, making it one of the oldest places in Andorra. In addition, the Interpretation Centre of Romanesque Art is worth a visit as well.
And if you are a skier or snowboarded, you can hit the slopes at the Pal-Arinsal ski resort in the winter and hike or mountain bike this area in the summer.
Soldeu
Soldeu is a small village high up in the mountains of Andorra (2,000 meters or 6,562 feet in altitude). It’s known for its amazing scenery and its popular ski resort, Grandvalira. In the summer, people come to Soldeu to enjoy activities like cycling and golf. There’s a bike park and a golf course (which is the highest one in Europe!).
If you enjoy nightlife, Soldeu has a variety of bars and night clubs to choose from. In addition, this village has quite a few hotels, restaurants and shops to entertain the non outdoorsy person as well.
Canillo:
Canillo is another snowy mountain village in Andorra, which is at 1,526 meters or 5,007 ft in altitude, making it one of the coldest places in the country. Canillo is a popular place to go skiing because it’s also close to the Grandvalira ski area.
Some of the most interesting things to see in Canillo, are these Romanesque churches. The Sanctuary of Meritxell and the Church of Sant Joan de Caselles.
You will also find shops, hotels, and restaurants in Canillo. It’s a good place to stay if you’re visiting Andorra with family or friends. There’s plenty to do, so no one will get bored!
