Akrotiri beaches, and the southwestern edge of Santorini that they sit on, were our first stops on Santorini. Why? Well, this is the historical Akrotiri peninsula which is far less touristy than the busy and splashy Oia.
This region isn’t just a collection of secluded beaches; it’s a journey through time, a feast for the senses, and a haven for those seeking both relaxation and exploration.
Unlike the busy town of Oia, Cape Akrotiri offers a more tranquil and authentic experience, making it an appealing destination for those wanting to avoid the big crowds.
This guide explores some of the best Akrotiri beaches, detailing how to reach them and what makes each unique. We also include some of the best restaurants and accommodations in Akrotiri village as well as logistics.
Keep in mind that many places in the Akrotiri Peninsula do not open until April 15th annually.
Best Time to Visit Akrotiri Beaches

The best period to visit Akrotiri beaches is April-May and September-October. However, below are the breakdowns of each “season”.
Peak Season (July-August):
The weather is hot and sunny, which is perfect for beach days. However, this is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit.
Shoulder Season (April-June & September-October):
These months offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable prices. It’s the ideal time for sightseeing and exploring the island. These months provide a great balance of good weather, and lighter crowds.
Off-Season (November-March):
While some businesses may be closed, this is the most peaceful time to visit. It’s perfect for those seeking a quiet and romantic getaway, especially if you get a place with a private jacuzzi.
Akrotiri Beaches: A Palette of Colors
Akrotiri beaches are known for their unique geological features, creating landscapes that are nothing short of spectacular.
Red Beach

Red Beach is perhaps the most famous beach in Santorini, let alone amongst the Akrotiri Beaches. It is known for its red volcanic cliffs and sand, which is a huge contrast to the blue water and sky. Keep in mind that the cliffs create a wind break causing the heat to be trapped in the area during the hot summer months with little to no wind.
In addition, please beware that the cliffs here are extremely unstable which can make visiting Red Beach quite dangerous. In our opinion this beach is best viewed from a distance.
Getting There: From Fira, the capital of Santorini, you can take a public bus to the Akrotiri Archaeological Site. From there, it’s a challenging and rocky 10-15 minute walk to the beach. Alternatively, renting a car or scooter allows you to park closer, reducing the walk to about 7-10 minutes, though the terrain can be uneven.
Boat excursions to Red Beach are also available from various locations on the island.
Why Visit: The unique red-hued cliffs and sand provide a stunning backdrop for sunbathing and photography. The clear waters are suitable for swimming, but visitors should be very cautious of potential landslides from the cliffs.
White Beach

Adjacent to Red Beach, White Beach offers a contrasting landscape with its dark sand and pebbles against the backdrop of the towering white cliffs. It’s less crowded than Red Beach, providing a more secluded experience.
The clear, shallow water is inviting for swimming and snorkeling You may also find a little natural shade from the cliffs. However, it’s a small beach with limited facilities (just a few sunbeds and umbrellas), so bring your own drinks and lots of sunscreen.
Getting There: White Beach is primarily accessible by boat. You can catch a small sailing boat from Akrotiri, near the Akrotiri Hotel, operated by “Daily Cruise.” This service typically runs every 1-2 hours, depending on the season.
Why Visit: The beach’s unique white cliffs and clear waters make it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Its relative seclusion offers a peaceful retreat.
Black Beach

Black Beach, also known as Mesa Pigadia, is a hidden gem known for its black sand and pebbles, surrounded by impressive rock formations. The beach is less developed, offering a quieter place to chill out.
Getting There: Located about 15 kilometers from Fira, Black Beach can be reached by car via a dirt road which is in passable condition. Boats also depart from Akrotiri peninsula to this beach. A parking area is available.
Why Visit: The beach’s unspoiled beauty and tranquility make it perfect for those seeking a quiet spot to relax. The surrounding caves and rock formations add to its charm.
Kambia Beach

Kambia Beach is a secluded spot with a pebbly shore and clear waters. It is located between Red Beach and White Beach. It’s an excellent location for snorkeling.
Getting There: Accessible by car, Kambia Beach is located on the southwest coast of Santorini, near Akrotiri village. The road leading to the beach is a dirt path which is navigable. Parking is available nearby. If you are bombing around in an ATV, this is a perfect secluded spot to cool off in.
Why Visit: Its seclusion and clear waters make it ideal for snorkeling and escaping the more crowded beaches.
Almyra Beach

Almyra Beach is known for its dark volcanic sand and pebbles, offering a unique landscape typical of Santorini’s volcanic origins. The beach is relatively quiet, providing a peaceful atmosphere.
Getting There: You can walk here from Kambia beach. Alternatively you can take a boat from Red Beach. Getting here by car is tough as the road is uneven and made up of difficult to navigate dirt paths.
Why Visit: The beach’s distinctive volcanic features and tranquility make it appealing for those looking to relax away from the crowds.
Caldera Beach

Caldera Beach has amazing views of Santorini’s caldera, providing a unique perspective of the island’s volcanic landscape. The beach has dark volcanic sand and pebbles.
Getting There: Located near Akrotiri Village, Caldera Beach is accessible by car. Visitors can park nearby and take a short walk to the beach.
Why Visit: First of all, this is one of the easiest beaches to access coupled with it’s unparalleled views of the caldera and the serene environment make Caldera one of the must-visit Akrotiri beaches.
Gialos Beach

Gialos Beach is a small, quiet beach with dark sand and clear waters, offering a tranquil setting for visitors.
Getting There: Gialos beach is located closer to the Akrotiri peninsula on the northern side, making it quite remote. Our scooter got down to this beach, as did a few cars. Just be careful as it is steep and rocky.
Why Visit: Gialos is quite remote making it a nice secluded spot. There is a bit of sand and a dock to jump off from into the warm water. When we visited, there were only 2 other people here.

Travel Tips for visiting the Akrotiri Peninsula

Explore Beyond the Akrotiri Beaches: Don’t miss the Akrotiri Archaeological Site, the Akrotiri Lighthouse, and the Venetian Castle of Akrotiri.
Try the local wine: Santorini is known for its unique volcanic wines and Santo Wines is a great location (just north of Akrotiri Village) to try many of them:
- Assyrtiko:
- This is Santorini’s flagship white grape, producing dry, crisp wines with high acidity and citrus notes.
- Look for wines from producers like Santo Wines and Argyros Estate.
- Vinsanto:
- A sweet dessert wine made from sun-dried Assyrtiko grapes, Vinsanto is rich, complex, and aged in oak barrels.
- It has notes of dried fruits, honey, and spices.
- Aidani:
- Another white grape varietal, Aidani produces aromatic wines with floral and fruity notes.
Enjoy the Sunsets: Santorini’s sunsets are legendary, so find a good spot to watch the sun dip below the horizon. Here are our top suggestions for best places to watch the sunset in and around Akrotiri Beaches:

- This is arguably the most iconic sunset spot in Akrotiri peninsula. The elevated position offers panoramic views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea.
- The dramatic cliffs and the lighthouse itself create a picturesque setting as the sun dips below the horizon.

Wrap Up – Akrotiri Beaches Guide

For us, the Akrotiri Village and peninsula were the most interesting parts of Santorini. Far fewer tourists (none of the cruise ship crowds) and so much more of the real feel of a Greek island.
In addition, Akrotiri Village has lots of great (and affordable) places to stay, delicious restaurants and perfect sunsets.
What’s more, the wines of this area are fabulous – especially sampling them right from the wineries! And if you enjoy history and archeological sites – Akrotiri peninsula has those as well. We can’t wait to come back to this area and soon!
A villa overlooking Akrotiri beaches with a Jacuzzi is something that we will definitely redo!
